We got snow...about 5 to 6 inches!! No power for 10 hours made us realize how ill prepared we are for the unexpected...but no damage to our home, just still no internet :tears:

It is amazing, how we step back into the 19th century, when we lose power. Besides the house, that oak looks beautiful dressed in snow. :snowflake: =D :snowflake:

LOL! I agree!! The tree is the same as my "highkey tree" photo but from the other side...we got a generator after this snowfall but haven't needed it. Which reminds me that we made it through the summer without a power outage :wow: we had several each for the other two we've been here - must have done some work further up the lines

Been there, done that! As a kid I remember wearing our outside gear in the house just to keep warm. I think we did it for 3 days before the roads were clear enough to find a hotel. After that we moved somewhere that had a smaller room with a fireplace! Perfect setup for these occassions.

As I've said before I am such a weather wimp  ...a small room with a fireplace now that does sound perfect! we are now the proud owner's of a large generator  In-laws bought it for the Y2K ten years ago - used it a few times and it's been gathering dust since...they said it wasn't working but after an afternoon of tinkering my husband got it going :w00t:

Well good for him! A generator can be a good thing! We bought a small one once we got here and had our first close call with a hurricane. It's not big enough to run the a/c which is what we wished for the most but it saved us from losing all the food in the fridge and freezer. We have a secondary problem when hurricanes come close here because anything over 2 inches of rain and our streets start to flood. They count on pumping stations to pump it out of the storm sewers and when we lose power those pumps don't work. When the streets flood we end up cut off from supplies like food and gas so you need to stock up ahead of time. No gas means no generator and then food goes bad but you can't just run out and get more. We never thought about these things before moving here! You were pretty smart to know that you wanted to be below the snow line!

You really have to wonder about the people that do emergency planning - It is so obvious that something that causes enough damage to need to pump water will probably disrupt the power as well... you'd think that was a no brainer!

We're learning about whether it is big enough to do the whole house - but a couple of extention cords (for the fridge and a couple heaters) will do - the water pump (to bring it not take it away :giggle:) supposedly takes a ton of power so we may have to forego flushing the toilets... but that's a question for an electrician

We wonder about the city planners but also about the people in the subdivisions. When things back up our sanitation sewers back up as well and the residents complain about it coming up in the street and yet they're still flushing and taking showers because the city water runs as long as the main pump house has power.DUH!!!

When we've been in your situation we've just shoveled snow into buckets and brought it in to melt so that we could flush. We were lucky enough to have a wood stove insert in the fireplace and could heat things up in pots on it. What else could you ask for?!

 what a conundrum  It sounds a bit like those who say "I can't be overdrawn...I still have checks!" :giggle:

I've been given the melting snow advice several times in the last couple weeks...and we will remember it! We've got a propane stove so we will be able to boil water :w00t: At this point we're more prepared than we were three weeks ago and watch...it won't snow again this year! :D

 Yup, that's the way things work for me. I had no idea what to stock up on when we first got here and they had dire warnings about stocking up for hurricane season. The following year I was more than prepared and we've had very little happen when they have come close!

I hope for your sake that's the case.
