Loon Lake Crystal Basin Recreation Area California by kayaksailor Loon Lake Crystal Basin Recreation Area California by kayaksailor
Another lake that is usually covered with five feet of snow...Loon Lake in the Sierra Nevada range west of Lake Tahoe in the Crystal Basin Recreation Area.

We went driving here on the Saturday before Valentine's Day, it snowed the next day and several people got stranded for three days...glad we'd gone earlier.

f stop vs Iso..outstanding!!

It was exceedingly bright with all the snow so I was able to have a fairly low iso - the f stop was my choice for getting some depth of field; but to be honest I'm not always thinking about it and often it is just luck

I haven't had a lot of experience with shoot in snow and it's a challenge for sure! Especially when the shadows are deep with afternoon side light...

I really love this shot, I especially think the sky is the best, and I can't remember when I saw a sky out detail the land in a picture. This is really good! :-)

 Thank you so much!! I am so pleased with this as I actually got the shot to work without resorting to an HDR program to "create" the details  I've learned a lot recently about tweaking with levels, contrast and individual color saturation :w00t: But the time of day helped a lot too :giggle:

You need to find better 'hoity-toities' to show your work to then. ;-)

:blowkiss: Winter has been very much like fall and spring  not winter at all...and we need some, lol. Very little rain means not much snow which means water rationing for many next summer...but I can not complain about the temperatures  I'm loving t-shirts during the day

We sure haven't had the usual Canadian winter here. Today felt like an April day. I am half expecting a drought this year as fall was very dry and we have had hardly any snow over winter. Sure not complaining about the warm winter, but really afraid about what is to come for this Spring and Summer. Farming is not a good thing to be in with such erratic weather these days.

I understand your fears! The rancher below us was making the same kind of comments last week - usually this time of year all their cows are on 'free range' but he's been having to supplement with hay...I've been hearing water-rationing fears from people who depend on the local rivers (which are fed by snow melt from the Sierras)...we've got a well, so hopefully we won't have any problems - makes me kind of glad we haven't put in lots of landscaping to demand irrigation!
