The day was heavily overcast and this young hawk (anyone know what kind?) spent the afternoon in a couple trees in my front yard...it kept calling and from across the valley I could hear another responding! I loved listening to them!!

And it was sure nice how the woodpeckers weren't anywhere around :w00t: They've been SO annoying :shakefist: with their pecking and pounding on the house eves!!

This bird is becoming an adult (probably a second year starting to have adult feathers).
Yhis is clearly a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus),

Great observation !

Alright! I was partly right, anyway, :giggle: it is a juvenile :D

It, or a similar one, was sitting on my deck railing this morning but it saw me and flew :(

It's definitely a red-shouldered hawk. How lucky you were and I love that you were able to get the flight shot and the sitting shot. That makes it much easier to identify.

Thanks for the confirmation! I haven't seen the red-shouldered enough to know it, but I think I do now! I must have spent a good half hour or more with my eye glued to the viewfinder LOL just waiting for the jump! I only wish there'd been more light. I heard the skree'ing again today, but didn't bother trying to find it as again today it was overcast and raining...no sunshine to make thermals to ride

If this is the same Hawk as the flight photo, I don't think it's a red-tailed. Maybe a Red-shouldered?

yes, it is the same...it could be. Thanks! I've been wrong between the two before :giggle: I just haven't had a lot of experience with the red-shouldered and they're not as distinctive from the air...
