mystery duck - who am I? by kayaksailor mystery duck - who am I? by kayaksailor
This unknown duck was trying to blend with the multiple mallards on a wider spot of Taylor Creek near Lake Tahoe - all were enjoying the eggs being laid by the spawning Kokonee Salmon

The beak shape and flesh around the eye made me know that it wasn't a common mallard  ...dark shade made getting this shot a bit of a challenge...maybe a Teal duck?

No I think it's a male juvenile Wood Duck coming into his grown up plumage!

Yeah, I think that is the agreement  I just forget that these are wild birds up here! Down in southern CA we only saw them IN the zoo :giggle:

Most colorful duck I know is a wood duck. So, that would be my guess.

Wow, strange lookin' guy! Looks like he is between plumages (perhaps juvenile to adult?) but that is all I can surmise. Wood duck does seem like a possibility though

Looks like a molting wood duck.
It's the only duck I know of that has that color of chest feathers.

He does indeed! But I do believe the Q. Duck's originally hailed from Regina, Canada and only emmigrated to follow cousin Daffy into showbiz. I may be wrong about that--I often am
